What Are Digital X-rays?

Digital X-rays are everyday 2D X-rays used during routine check-ups to look between and beneath your teeth for things like decay, bone loss, or other early issues that are not visible to the naked eye. They are quick, simple, and a normal part of keeping your teeth healthy.

Compared to older film X-rays, digital X-rays use noticeably less radiation and produce an image on screen instantly, so there is no waiting for film to develop. For bigger or more complex cases, we may instead use our on-site 3D CBCT scanner, but for routine check-ups, a digital X-ray is usually all that is needed.

We know X-rays can sound more serious than they are, but this is one of the most routine, low-fuss parts of a dental visit. At iCare Dental in IOI City Mall Putrajaya, our team will only recommend one when it is genuinely useful, and we are always happy to explain exactly what we are looking for.

Frequently asked questions.

Here is what people ask us most about Digital X-rays.

Yes, digital X-rays use significantly less radiation than older film-based X-rays, and the dose involved is very small. They are a routine, well-established part of everyday dental care.

A digital X-ray gives a quick, flat 2D image and is used for routine check-ups and basic diagnosis, such as spotting decay between teeth. A CBCT scan is a more detailed 3D image used for bigger or more complex cases like implants or root canal treatment, so the two serve different purposes.

Not necessarily, your dentist will recommend one based on how long it has been since your last X-ray and whether anything needs a closer look. We will always explain why one is being suggested.

This is often included as part of a routine check-up, though it can vary depending on your individual needs. We recommend asking us directly or booking a consultation for a personalised quote.

No, it is quick and comfortable. You simply hold still for a moment while the sensor captures the image, and most patients barely notice it happening.
