What Is Scaling & Polishing?

Scaling and polishing is a routine professional dental cleaning that removes plaque, tartar and surface stains from your teeth. Scaling clears the hardened plaque, called tartar, that builds up along your gum line, while polishing smooths the tooth surface and lifts away everyday stains.

Brushing and flossing at home can only do so much, since tartar hardens onto your teeth and cannot be removed with a toothbrush alone. A professional scale and polish reaches the areas your daily routine cannot, keeping your gums healthier between visits.

At our clinic in IOI City Mall Putrajaya, we also offer Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT), a Swiss EMS method that uses a warm-water-and-powder spray to clean teeth and gums gently. It is the premium, more comfortable version of a scale and polish, and you can read more on our biofilm-guided therapy page.

Frequently asked questions.

Here is what people ask us most about Scaling & Polishing.

Scaling removes hardened plaque, known as tartar, from your teeth and along the gum line using fine dental instruments. Polishing follows afterwards to smooth the tooth surface and lift away surface stains, leaving your teeth feeling clean and looking brighter.

Most patients find scaling and polishing comfortable, with at most a mild sensitivity if you have tender gums. If you are particularly nervous, let our team know beforehand so we can adjust our approach and keep you at ease.

We generally recommend scaling and polishing every six months as part of a routine check-up, though this can vary if you have a build-up of tartar or early signs of gum disease. We will advise a schedule that suits you.

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is a Swiss EMS cleaning method that uses a warm-water-and-powder spray instead of traditional scraping to remove plaque, stains and tartar. Many patients find it a gentler, more comfortable experience, which is why we offer it as the premium version of a standard scale and polish.

Cost can vary depending on how much tartar build-up needs addressing and whether you choose a standard clean or Guided Biofilm Therapy. We recommend booking a check-up so we can assess your gums and give you a personalised quote.
